Frozen pipes prevent water flow, and can eventually burst, causing damage and potential flooding, however, there are steps that you can take to prevent this happening.

Here we tell you some of the things you can do to prevent your pipes from freezing:

• Allow Faucet to drip

This can actually keep a frozen pipe from bursting. The pressure created between the blockage and the faucet is what causes a pipe to burst. Allowing the faucet to be open will relieve the pressure in the system, preventing it from building up, which in turn will keep the pipe from bursting.

• Keep the Heat on

Keeping the heat on can help to prevent pipes from freezing. It doesn't have to be kept on high, but just keeping it at 50 degrees Fahrenheit should provide enough heat to keep the pipes warm and prevent any water inside from freezing., as if the pipes do freeze and burst, it can cause a lot of water damage.

• Insulate Pipes in the attic

Exposed pipes are more likely to freeze so insulating these can help to prevent this.

• Leave doors open on kitchen and bathroom cabinets

This will allow warmer air to circulate and reach pipes under sinks and in adjacent outside walls.

• Turn off water supply to outside taps

Turn off the mains water at the stopcock unless you have a combi boiler that requires constant mains pressure.
