Winter is the most common time for boilers to break down.  Looking after your boiler can extend its life, keeping it working efficiently and safely. Here we give you advice and tips on how you can try and avoid a boiler breakdown this winter!

Annual Boiler Servicing

Annual Boiler Servicing is crucial in keeping your boiler working efficiently and safely. If your boiler is new, it can even affect the warranty, if your boiler is not serviced annually. Ensure that you always use a Gas Safe Registered Engineer to service your boiler.

Fix any issues that arise promptly

No matter how old your boiler is, problems can arise.  From small repairs to a full boiler replacement and so, it's imperative that you keep on top of any problems that do arise with your boiler. It can be easy to put repairs off, but having the small repairs sorted promptly can avoid bigger costly repairs later!

Don't have clutter around your boiler

A boiler should be kept well ventilated, therefore, it is essential that the space surrounding your boiler is kept clear from clutter. If your boiler is in a cupboard ensure that there isn't clutter in there too such as coats and bags.  If you are unsure that there is sufficient ventilation, consult your plumber at your annual service.

Keep an eye on your boiler pressure

Over time, your boiler can lose pressure which decreases efficiency. Check the pressure every couple of months and if it falls below 1 bar for most boilers, top it up! You can find out how to do this by referring to your boiler handbook.

Bleeding your radiators

Inefficiently running radiators can make your boiler work much harder! Bleeding your radiators is simple, it just involves opening a valve on your radiators and letting out the trapped air causing them to not heat up properly. If you have any problems with this, a plumber can help.

Cleaning your boiler regularly

We wouldn't advise you to do this yourself as cleaning the inside of your boiler can be dangerous, however over time, boilers collect dust just like anything else in your home, and require cleaning. If you have an annual boiler service, your plumber should do this as part of the service.  You can, however, use a soft cloth to dust the outside of your boiler.

Powerflushing

Powerflushing is a deep clean of your radiators and central heating system. It uses chemicals to flush out all the sludge, rust, and other debris that settles in radiators, pipes, and boilers and prevents them from working properly.

Whilst this is a service for your radiators, it is of great benefit to your boiler too!

Carbon Monoxide Detectors

And last but certainly not least, install Carbon Monoxide detectors in your home! A faulty boiler can leak Carbon Monoxide and pose a serious risk to you and your family. A Carbon Monoxide Detector next to your boiler is an effective way to ensure that it is safe!  Remember to check it regularly and change the batteries when needed!
