Spring is here at last, meaning lighter evenings and hopefully some warmer weather! So here at Harris Heating, we thought it would be a great idea to share some tips on changes you could make around your home to maintain an efficient heating system and in addition, save money on your energy bills!

The first tip would be to spring clean your heating system...

This may sound strange and you may be wondering how on earth do I spring clean my heating system!? Well simply regular maintenance, for example, bleeding your radiators can ensure that you get the most out of your heating system when it is turned on. Spring is also a great time to get your boiler serviced. It can ensure your system is running efficiently, and if any work is needed, having this done is Spring is so much better than in Winter when you rely so much on your boiler for warmth.

You can simply reduce the temperature of your heating...

Heating and hot water equate to more than half of the cost of energy in our homes. Making a few adjustments to the way in which you heat your home can save you money and Spring is the perfect time to do this.

Adjusting your heating timer, reducing the frequency, particularly when you're not at home is one way to save money on your energy bills.  According to the Energy Saving Trust, reducing the amount of time your heating is actually on is the best way to save money despite many people believing that leaving your heating on low all day is more cost-effective.

Your thermostat will be set to a higher temperature in Winter, however, in Spring you won't need to have this set as high,  so turning your thermostat down will still allow you to heat your home to the required level, but save you money on your energy bills. 19 degrees is the recommended setting you allow you to still heat your home to a comfortable level.

Try to avoid using your tumble dryer by drying your clothes outside...

Make the most of the sunlight and hang your clothes out to dry rather than using your tumble dryer.  It is very easy to run up energy bills using a tumble dryer as it is a costly appliance so drying your clothes outside could really help to save you money.

Wear the right clothes around the house for the season...

Dressing for Summer instead of Spring can mean you are sticking the heating on when you don't actually need to.  Instead of using your heating, stick a cardigan on if you feel a little cold around the house! It may be that you're just not dressing for Spring!

Use the Sunlight - not your lights if you don't need to...

Our mornings are lighter and evenings longer so make use of the sunlight and turn off lights around your house! You can also keep your blinds or curtains open for longer in the evenings, providing natural light and warmth into your home.  This will save you money on your energy bills.
