Because Heating accounts for around 60 percent of your total annual energy bill, an efficient boiler can make a huge difference!

New, Modern Boilers are much more efficient for various different reasons, but the main reason is that they are condensing boilers. A condensing boiler has a larger heat exchanger, so it recovers more heat, sends cooler gases up the flue, and is, therefore, more efficient. On occasion, the flue gases can get so cool that the water vapour in the gas condenses out and even more energy is recovered from the condensing vapour.

There is no doubt that a Boiler is the heart of the home and an essential but complicated piece of machinery. If you have an old, inefficient boiler which is costing you money in energy wastage and repairs, it may be time to consider a new, energy efficient boiler.

So you have decided that it's time to change your boiler!  The next step is deciding which type of boiler is right for you.

Combi (or combination) Boilers

The most popular boiler in the UK, a Combination Boiler provides hot water without the use of tanks or cylinders. Combination Boilers are relatively compact and supply unlimited heat and hot water to your taps and radiators whenever you need it.

Conventional Boilers

These are often known as regular or open vent boilers, conventional boilers include a cylinder and a tank to accommodate all your water heating requirements. With a Conventional Boiler, you are able to use multiple taps simultaneously without reducing water pressure. The downside - once the hot water has been used up, you will have to wait for it to reheat. They're also big and bulky so if you are limited on space, this may not be the best option.

System boilers

Also commonly referred to as sealed system boilers, these have a cylinder but no water tank making them smaller than Conventional Boilers, but still have the downside of limited hot water supply. You can, however, use multiple taps at the same time which does help if you have a big family!

Condensing boilers

Available in all the aforementioned types, condensing boilers feature the added attribute of being able to capture and reuse some of the heat it puts out. Because they’re so energy-efficient, they’re a great way to save money on electricity bills.

Choosing the right boiler to suit your needs could significantly reduce your energy consumption and, according to price comparison site uSwitch, save you as much as £300 a year. Needless to say, investing some time in properly researching your options will really pay off in the future.
